The Coleorton Colliery comprised Coleorton No1 mine (California) 1850-1873 opposite the New Inn, Peggs Green and the Coleorton No2 mine (Califat off St Georges Hill, Swannington. swannington-heritage.co.uk/coal-rail/califat-coal-mine/ Excavations of the buildings were led by Leicestershire Industrial History Society www.lihs.org.uk/ with support from Swannington Heritage Trust.
The engine house next to the Alabama shaft was used for pumping water out of the mine. It was excavated 1993-1999 and since 2022 work on presenting the site has taken place.
The engine house next to the Califat shaft was used for winding men in and out of the mine, plus winding coal up. The winding drum pit is shown in before the side of the engine house.
From the south the end of the Califat engine house is seen along with the base of the chimney on the right. The engine house was excavated 2006-2022.
From the north the stoke pits and boiler cradles are visible, with the base of the chimney at the far end. The higher walls of the engine house are on the right.
