During the last 15 years about 15,000-20,000 of research has been undertaken into the history of Swannington and the surrounding area. Tangents have taken the researcher to many places throughout the UK. Research is continuing and new information added. The intention is to document this research in several series of books so that it will be available to the public in perpetuity.
Enjoy Heritage UK is working on three books about the Califat Coal Mine, Swannington. Unless something goes drastically wrong at least one book will be launched on Saturday 5th July 2025 at the open garden in Griffydam to raise funds for Swannington Heritage Trust www.afewchangesinthegarden.org/open-day.
The first excavation of the Califat coal mine buildings began in 1993 and apart from a seven year interlude it has been going ever since. This book has been written and is being edited down to about 400 pages.
Six miners met their deaths at the Califat coal mine in four fatal incidents. This book covers them all. A substantial amount of the book has been written and it will be completed in 2025.
The Califat coal mine was one of five mines with common ownership and management. Incidents at all five mines have been used to piece together how the coal mine operated. This book has been written and is being edited ready for publication in 2025.
Research for this book is still ongoing and 2027 is a realistic estimated date for publication.
